Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative including angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to begin their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table features Teor (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group understands precisely where to go next after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, striking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows Timmony and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the team enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Questers and Planners groups.

Viewers can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
