Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
