The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
