On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
